"Boo-ti-ful" October Monthly Meeting

In honor of Domestic Violence Prevention Month, Dana Point Women’s Club (DPWC) hosted a speaker from Laura's House, a local philanthropy which provides education, counseling, legal services, emergency shelter and transitional housing to victims of domestic violence and abuse in Orange County.

Toni Nelson, DPWC First Vice President, presented a check for $1000 on behalf of Dana Point Women's Club to be used for counseling services at Laura's House.

As usual, the Club hosted an action-packed meeting in keeping with DPWC's desire to have "fun in philanthropy".

Hospitality Chair Karin Marsh and her team outdid themselves with a Halloween-themed decor and menu for the "Boo-tiful" meeting which featured a delicious potluck spread of spooky treats contributed by members. The Club's "Garden Gals" created beautifully decorated pumpkins, a succulent wreath and a lovely fall arrangement which were raffled or offered via silent auction to the assembled guests. Julie Barkley of Juls Julary offered handmade jewelry pieces for sale to members, and generously donated two items and 15% of meeting sales to DPWC's philanthropies.

Chili Cookoff Annual Fundraiser

Dana Point Women’s Club held its annual Chili Cook Off on Sunday, October 15th, challenging 4 contestants from Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club and 4 from the Women’s Club to compete for the titles of Best Chili Team and Tastiest Chili Entry. The sold-out event was held both indoors and outdoors at the Club’s Community House venue, which was festively decked with pumpkins and harvest plaids for the occasion.

DPWC Ways & Means Chair, Marla Freeman was delighted. “Not only did people have a great time, but we raised over $5,000 for two very worthy causes - the Reading Program for Kids at Dana Point Library, and our Project Scholarship for graduating DHHS students.”

President Kathy Belanger added that "it was especially nice to include members of the Dana Point Rotary Club in the event. This group will be partnering with us on Project Angel Tree (gifts for children of struggling local families) for the third time this year and we are grateful for their support. We were delighted to work with them recently on a project benefiting kids in local hospitals, and are so happy to welcome their President, Heather Gillon, as a new DPWC member!”

Board Member, Toni Nelson, Participates as "Principal for a Day" at Palisades Elementary School

Principal Rebecca Bailey in her office following a rousing school -wide assembly and awards ceremony.

Following a visit as Principal for a Day in 2019, Toni Nelson (DPWC Board Member) was delighted to be invited back to this wonderful little ocean view school located in the Palisades Area of Capistrano Beach. With an enrollment of 325 students, Palisades Elementary is one of the oldest of the 36 schools in the Capistrano Unified School District. The 1961 campus has a distinct “old school” vibe, but the educational standards are anything but. While the student-centered education is achievement oriented, students are treated as individuals and character building and practical life skills are essential parts of the curriculum.
