Graduation Tea

Our May 2nd graduation tea was a huge success! Scholarship Chair Betty Hill presented scholarships to three deserving and impressive young students. Dana Hills High School Graduates, with certificates, from left, Evelin Chavez, Jessica Barron and Yileidy Rojas each received a $1,500 check to help defray the costs of further education. All three girls had impressive records of academic achievement, extracurricular activities and leadership responsibilities while working part time jobs in the community. 5th District Representative Sarah D’Agostina was also on hand to congratulate the girls, presenting them each with a certificate of recognition from Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley, along with her sincere well wishes. Thank you to our outstanding scholarship commitee, Carol Kelly, Chair Betty HIll, Sheryl Kaner, Maggie Arquilla and Rita Jones. Huge congrats to these delightful young women and their proud families!

SparkPoint Presentation

Thanks to Marla Freeman and her team, Cocktails for a Cause was a huge success, almost doubling our last effort. President Kathy Belanger was thrilled to present a check for $18,000 to Taylor Montano and Rosa Conde of Orange County United Way's SparkPoint Program in South OC. Thank you to our generous members, guests, sponsors and donors for helping us make a real difference in the lives of struggling local famiies!

New Scholarship Endowment Fund

Also at the May meeting, First Vice President Toni Nelson announced an endowment to DPWC to fund the Ann Austin Romano Scholarship Fund. The sweet lady pictured left, Ann Romano, passed away on March 28th, leaving the bulk of her estate to charity. She also left a $15,000 legacy to Toni, her neighbor and friend, who decided to use it to create a scholarship fund in Ann's honor. Ann was very keen on women's empowerment, education and her beloved ommunity of Capistrano Beach. The endowment will be funded later this summer and will be invested by DPWC and used to fund an annual $1,500 scholarship to a young woman high school graduate and resident of Capistrano Beach for the next 10 - 14 years depending on investment income. This year, for the first time, DPWC was able to award a third scholarship to a deserving student chosen from a field of 24 applicants. Next spring, our local 2025 graduates will have a chance to win one of four DPWC Project Scholarship Awards!

Mike Wolff - Community House Fix-It Hero

When Monique Wolff agreed to be our Community House Facility Director, we didn't realize we were getting a package deal. Monique's husband, Mike, a retired commercial contractor, has been a Godsend to our Club and our 1950's era building.

Whether it's installing a new gate, erecting shiplap and a pocket door, removing a window, dry walling, mounting a fireplace mantle, adding a hose bib, framing a door, locating impossible to find vintage fasteners for our schoolhouse windows... you name it, Mike has a solution that's fast, low cost, and perfectly done!

This wonderful man charges us very little for his expertise, managing difficult repairs as if they were no big deal.

We are thrilled to have Mike on our team.

If you see him working at Community House, give him a wave -- or a hug! He deserves it. Thank you for being our Fix-It Hero, Mike!
